But in some ways, I certainly think that this break will be good for Liverpool. For one, Brendan Rodgers can go back to the drawing board and lay out his plan for the season – how we’re going to work with his philosophy, what is Gerrard’s role, and who plays as the ‘false 9? up front (if we’re going to go with that).
In that respect, it will be good for the team. Furthermore, it’s nice to come back a week after with wins on international duty, as the mood of Liverpool is… well, isn’t the best, and I reckon we will do well to come back refreshed and raring to start afresh.
So I reckon that this break will be good for the lads. Get them motivated once more, get them the winning habit. It’s all part of the football process.
Well, I haven’t talked about our transfer dealings recently (or posted much on this space much for that fact), so I’ll just talk about it now. I do understand that there is a long term plan instilled in this football club.
But what about this year? We must focus on the present to build a good foundation for future years. If we compete for mid-table mediocrity this year, what if we struggle to find our bearings after that? We must have a long term plan, but we need to also work towards it, not take too many steps backwards.
Clint Dempsey was the player that could have changed our fortunes. A winger/attacking midfielder by trade, he could have provided that edge that we needed in front of goal. The numbers he produced at Fulham were impressive, whilst we were in desperate need of a player of his mould, which is why I struggle to understand why we didn’t fork out the extra million for the American.
I’m pretty sure that his deal would have paid for himself in prize money if it had been completed. Not only would it stop Tottenham from having a highly capable player, but we would also have a fantastic midfielder/winger alternative. I’m sure his wage demands would have been negotiable given the midfielder’s willingness to try and trigger a move to Merseyside.
Another thought of mine: Suarez remaining as a false 9. I know his finishing still leaves people wanting more, but he is exactly the type of player Liverpool need to spearhead the attack. He creates chances and space for his teammates (although I would much prefer if he would share the ball sometimes) and if he improves on his finishing, we will have a very potent attacking threat.
