Despite her narrow win, Kumaratunga still has support from other parties. Douglas Devananda, leader of Eelam People’s Democratic Party, told NEWSWEEK: “We have full faith in Kumaratunga.”
But violence on polling day could be a sign of unrest to come. Liberation Tigers of Tamil fired mortars and rockets in the north, limiting voter turnout in the area to 20 percent. Kumaratunga might just find that getting her brother’s approval–and that of the opposition–will be the least of her future troubles.
